Welcome to Anza-Borrego, the hidden gem desert of southern California. Given that Anza-Borrego is a desert, the climate can be extreme. Be sure to pack lots of water, sunblock, and hats to protect yourself from the sun.
Summers can be extremely hot with temperatures exceeding 100°F, so the ideal time to visit is between November and April when temperatures are milder.
Coming from the west (Los Angeles or San Diego). Do not miss the overlook of the valley. Also be prepared for a magical change of scenery that will leave you speechless.
Montezuma Valley Road Lookout is a hidden gem located in the charming city of Borrego Springs, United States. This scenic spot offers a panoramic view of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the largest state park in California. The winding drive up to the lookout is an adventure in itself, with the road twisting and turning through the rugged desert landscape, offering glimpses of the stunning vistas that await at the top.
Start your day in the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the largest state park in California. This place is a must-visit for the legendary spring wildflower bloom. You can also tour the park’s 12 wilderness areas, where you’ll see wildlife and beautiful landscapes of badlands, canyons, and valleys.
Don’t miss the Palm Canyon Trail that leads to a lovely waterfall. The hike is about 3 miles round trip and allows you to see beautiful palm trees and possibly bighorn sheep. Afterwards, head over to explore the visitor’s center to learn about the area’s history and ecology.
For the best experience with wildlife viewing, try to be as quiet as possible to prevent disturbing the animals.
Always follow the “Leave No Trace” principles to help preserve the park’s natural beauty for future generations. This includes packing out all your trash and respecting wildlife from a distance.
In the afternoon, visit the Galleta Meadows Estate to witness over 130 giant metal sculptures, a desert gem brought to life by artist Ricardo Breceda. The sculptures range from prehistoric animals to mythical creatures, offering amazing photo opportunities.
A visit to the Calcite Mine Slot Canyon is incomplete without exploring the labyrinthine slot canyon itself, which boasts stunning sandstone formations and provides a challenging yet rewarding adventure for experienced hikers. Another must-see is the panoramic view atop the mine, which offers breathtaking vistas of the surrounding Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The area is also a haven for wildflower blooms during the spring season, adding a vibrant splash of color to the landscape.
After a good day of hiking and, grab a dinner at Coyote Steakhouse! The excellent food and ambiance (by the hotel’s pool and a live piano some nights) couldn’t be better. Even though it’s a “steakhouse” they have vegetarian options as well!
Don’t forget to look up and enjoy the star-filled sky at night.
Begin your day early for a four-wheel-drive adventure through the park’s excellent off-road trails like the Fish Creek Wash. It’s a beautiful trail leading you through Split Mountain, with towering canyon walls surrounding you from either side.
Be sure to bring a spare tire if you plan to do the off-road trails, as the rocky terrain can be tough on your tires. Cell service can be sporadic. Download offline maps or carry physical maps for navigation
Next, head over to the Borrego Badlands for some impressive sandstone formations that make for a breathtaking sight. This area is practically untouched, allowing you to truly soak in the beauty of nature.
Make sure to stop by Fonts Point – often referred to as California’s Grand Canyon. This jaw-dropping overlook gives breathtaking panoramic views of the park’s badlands. Access is via a sandy, four-mile road, best tackled with a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Ensure to reach here at sunrise or sunset for capturing magnificent snaps.
