Wow, what an epic adventure awaits you! The Mighty 5 - five of the most stunning national parks in the United States - are all located in southern Utah and include Canyonlands, Arches, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, and Zion. Let me guide you on a fantastic road trip that will let you experience these natural wonders up close and personal!
Pre-Trip Preparation:
Let’s assume you’re starting from Salt Lake City (a common entry point), although Las Vegas could also be an alternative start/end point.
Approx. 3.5-hour drive
Start early morning towards Moab. - Stop by Arches National Park visitor center - Explore Park Avenue Viewpoint & Trailhead - Hike to Delicate Arch (3 miles round trip) for a sunset view. Overnight in Moab.
Spend half-day in Arches: - Explore Devils Garden Loop (7.8-mile hike is optional) Afternoon in Canyonlands: - Drive Island in the Sky District; visit Mesa Arch If energy permits explore more viewpoints or short hikes Overnight again in Moab.
Approx. 2.5-hour drive
Drive to Capitol Reef via Utah Scenic Byway 24 E: - Visit the visitor center - Take scenic drive (check road conditions) Hikes: Hickman Bridge or Capitol Gorge if time allows Overnight near Torrey.
Approx. 2-hour drive
Morning departure from Torrey: Explore more of Capitol Reef if desired before leaving. Drive to Bryce Canyon: Afternoon arrival at Bryce. Visit Sunset Point Evening stargazing (The night sky here is phenomenal!) Overnight near Bryce.
Full day to explore the hoodoos! Morning hike through Navajo Loop and Queens Garden Trail Afternoon enjoy viewpoints: Inspiration Point, Bryce Point
Optional evening hike or leisure at your accommodation. Overnight near Bryce.
Approx.1.5-hour drive
Arrive at Zion by midday, Park your car and take the park shuttle bus*, Spend rest of day on hikes like Emerald Pools or Riverside Walk, Attend evening ranger program if available, Overnight near Springdale/Zion
*Note: During peak seasons/shuttle operation times personal vehicles may not be allowed on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive so utilize park shuttle service
Get an early start, Attempt more challenging hikes such as Angels Landing* or Observation Point via East Mesa Trail Depart Zion for return trip in afternoon/evening
*Permits/random lottery might be required for Angels Landing; check in advance!
