Liberia, Maryland is a small county located in the state of Maryland. It is home to about 9,000 people and has a rich history that dates back to the 1600s. Liberia was an important part in American history during the Civil War when Confederate forces occupied nearby Harpers Ferry in 1861. The 5th Regiment United States Colored Troops helped liberate Harpers Ferry from Confederate control later that same year. This group would become one of the first African-American regiments authorized by Congress during this time period and their bravery earned them recognition as "The Heroic Regiment".
